History
From its inception, this magnificent residence was surrounded by mystery and the thrill of adventure. It was custom built by Miss Lilly – an internationally recognized figure in the film industry. While traveling throughout the United States, she was captivated by the beauty of the Adirondack Mountains and their similarity to her homeland in Switzerland. Her hunger for free-expression motivated her to custom design a retreat resembling a Bernese-style Swiss villa. This would be her romantic hideaway.
Every detail of the building project was a labor of love – she even had workers construct a lumber mill to use trees harvested from the property for fencing. Ms. Lilly purchased a 19th century historical stone building from which craftsman built the fireplaces. Her earliest childhood memories were of the mountains of her homeland, so she changed the topography to create an elevation for the house that enabled her bedroom balconies to face the green drenched mountains and see across cleared meadows to Lake Champlain. Her presence is felt in every aspect of the paradise she so carefully created.
Ms. Lilly’s life at North Winds was filled with artists and celebrities from all over the world who gathered to be nurtured by the warmth of her spirit and the welcoming embrace of this sanctuary cradled in the heart of the Adirondacks.
