9040 Little Mountain Road
Kirtland Hills
“ Enchanting English Elegance”
9040 Little Mountain Road is a historically rich estate
conceived for grand-scale entertaining, a myriad of sporting activities, and
agricultural pursuits in the most private and luxurious country setting
imaginable. Reached via a covered
bridge over a small tributary of the Chagrin River, the stunning Tudor
residence reveals interiors scaled and dressed to match the magnificent
setting.
This one-of-a-kind farmstead with its long history and
pastoral beauty is thought to be possibly the oldest home in Ohio. The original medieval structure was
built in 1472 in Kent, England and was dissembled and transported to Ohio in
1923. The home reflects the 1920’s
passion for the re-creation of historic settings and was transported piece by
piece to become the home of Cleveland industrialist, Leonard C. Hanna Jr. It is perched above Hart Road in
Kirtland Hills, and was frequented by many famed celebrities invited by Hanna
to be houseguests for a weekend of fun and relaxation.
The beautifully preserved estate consists of the seven
bedroom English residence plus the pool house featuring a wet bar, his and her
changing rooms, and a large stone terrace sitting between the pool and clay
tennis court. Additionally, a
feudal style stable with pony barn and several guest residences graces the
landscape. A massive restoration
defined the buildings as they stand today. The wonderful English home spans 7,614 square feet and is
included in the National Register of Historic Places. No effort or expense has been spared in completing the
interior of the home. It combines
period interiors and five-star comfort. Thick oak doors, authentic period wrought
iron and hand hewned wood beams set the stage for the fascinating authentic proper
15th century construction.
A brightly colored stained glass window graces the front
entry and depicts an English nursery rhyme, The main residence consists of a 2
½ -story great room that is bordered by a narrow gallery called an archer’s
post. This served as a place for
the renaissance-era “bouncers” to stand and watch the partygoers and make sure
they did not get out of hand! The
ornately carved paneled dining room features a beamed ceiling with lead glass
windows and is warmed by an enormous fireplace for hearth cooking. The updated and generously proportioned
kitchen allows for informal dining and loads of space for the epicurean. A paneled living room offers a
place for quiet retreat with a massive fireplace and 2-story beamed
ceiling. The first floor master
bedroom with his and her dressing rooms and baths is a wonderful and private
retreat accessed by a breezeway with slate floors and garden views.
The second story is complete with six additional bedrooms,
which are ideal in providing a comfortable welcome for guests and family.
