Most cats love spending time outdoors, but this can become a nightmare for owners concerned about their furry-friend’s safety. Introduce, the Catio, or a cat-patio, the perfect opportunity for pet-owners to provide their cats with a safe outdoor play area.Catios have grown in popularity in recent years, even being featured in the New York Times. Many of the designs go well-beyond a simple caged-in space and instead become luxurious screened in areas that can be enjoyed by cats and their owners.
There are endless opportunities for catio designs, but most catios make sure to include key components such as scratching posts and ledges for lounging. Some include customizable screen walls, which move away from the cage-like feel of most fencing and create a relaxed atmosphere. Lounging areas can be created with rocks, platforms or trees. A tropical Florida catio uses cat-safe foliage, ramps, perches and a koi pond to create a more exotic space. Another example is a “serene catio featured at Modernica includes a range of plants, as well as Asian-inspired touches, such as bamboo” (Decoist). One space is ideal for cats and their owners, totaling 600-square-feet, the enclosure can hold up to 16 cats. It uses plastic-coated galvanized fencing and redwood, with ramps, a view platform, steps and a koi pond.
