Colorado is the highest state in the continental US—in fact, it’s the only state that lies entirely above 3,300’ (1,000 meters) in elevation. The capital, Denver, is known as the Mile High City because the steps of the capital building are exactly 5,280’ above sea level. The Continental Divide runs north-south through the state and there are 54 peaks that are over 14,000’ in elevation—each of which can be climbed in a day.

The eastern third of Colorado is rolling plains and mostly agricultural, while the western third of the state—the Western Slope—is the source of many rivers that find their way to the Pacific. The middle—Colorado’s famous ‘high country’—is home to the best skiing, camping, hiking, climbing, horseback riding, mountain biking and fishing in the entire country. The bulk the state’s population lives along the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains and plays in the high country to the west.

Colorado’s climate is complex compared to most other states because of its varied topography. As a general rule, an increase in elevation brings a decrease in temperature and increase in precipitation. It is well-established, though, that the state enjoys more sunshine than Hawaii and Florida, and that residents are considered the healthiest in the nation—because they love to be outdoors in the mild weather on those sunny days all year around. In fact, Colorado has the lowest obesity rate of any state in the union and one of the lowest percentages of smokers.

Once a mining and agricultural cow town, Denver today is a vibrant and dynamic metropolis that is home to a highly educated workforce. The National Renewable Energy Lab is located in nearby Golden, and it has drawn many solar, wind and other alternate energy generation companies to the area as well. Employment opportunities abound in diverse high tech and clean industry fields throughout the city.

Denver’s sports and entertainment scene is unparalleled. Professional football, baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer and lacrosse teams keep die-hard sports fans busy. The city’s restaurants and art venues run the gamut of ethnicities, cultivated tastes and affordability. Because Denver International Airport is large, modern and situated near the center of the US, travel into and out of the region is easy.

Evergreen, a small mountain community located a half hour west of Denver in the foothills between the front range population center and the high country, offers the best of both worlds: a quiet small-town lifestyle just minutes away from the excitement, shopping and employment opportunities in a major metropolitan area.

Life is a little slower in Evergreen. The air is crisp, the climate is mild, the mountain valleys are peaceful, the streams run clear and the people are happy to stop and say hello.

If living in Colorado conjures a picture of your dream home in a quiet mountain community surrounded by acres and acres of open space, Evergreen is where you will want to live. Visit www.DiscoverEvergreen.com for more information about this hidden treasure just minutes from Denver but miles closer to heaven.
